The Spirited One: A Haiku

Since before your birth
Both a slave and a master
Of all your senses
****
You hear what’s silent
Then with perfect pitch impart
Sweet somethings Daily
****
Eyes led by the heart
Look both far away and near
And see hidden things
****
Tactile sensations
To the skin and to the soul
At times overwhelm
****
The flavor of life
Savored first by tongue and then
Shared through blessed words
****
Scents lead and prompt you
To sniff and cause big trouble
And that’s so way cool

  1. I have been prewriting (in my head) an ode to my son. You beat me to it πŸ™‚ How beautiful!

    “Tactile sensations
To the skin and to the soul”
This one really jumped out at me to savor.

      • These spirited ones are awesome and I cannot help but tell what I notice. I think they bring out the same qualities in us if we possessed them in the first place. What is amazing to me is the photo, which I took when I was just lighting incense, just living my life, and it seems to match the words.

      • Speaking of the photo, I have been wondering about the photos that you use. I’ve been wanting to ask how you find and choose them. Which comes first, the photo or the haiku? Did you take all of the photos that you use here?

      • Thank you for asking me — that is a fun question to answer. The photos are ones I’ve stopped to take along the way. I tend to slow down my travel partners πŸ™‚ There are a few photos that I pulled from other identified sources and then linked. The photo never comes first. The words come from a given experience and then I look for a photo that might make the viewer wonder. How do you choose the topics for your writing?

      • I would love to go for a walk with you and our cameras πŸ™‚

I don’t choose the topics for my writings; they choose me. They catch my attention, take up residency, and fill my head with wonder. I write what I wonder. Drafts drift this way and that with my perspective. Questions come to mind, I find answers from reputable sources, and come up with more questions. Segments come to mind when I’m out and about, and I rush back to my computer to record them.

My fiction is similar. I start at one point. As I write, I discover the story and record it.

Last summer or Spring, I wrote a few flash fiction stories on google+, each prompted by a painting. I was amazed that I could do it, and amazed by what I found in me. I’ve considered participating in Friday Fictioneers, which is similar…when I have a moment when I’m not in the middle of a pile of other stuff that I’m writing.

      • You DO write about your wonder. O think that’s why I enjoy your writing, plus the authoritative sources. Do you ever feel like you’re tethered to your notebook/computer? Is that an entirely a good thing for you?

      • I am impeccable about authoritative resources. When I have to refer to Wikipedia and popular publications because I can’t find “real” sources, I only use them to help me identify their sources.

Am I tethered to my computer/journal? I get so energized by ideas for how to do things, that now I fear being addicted to writing. I am very careful to listen for any calls to do other things like gardening, housekeeping, cooking… Yes, you are incredibly perceptive, much like my husband. He gently nudges me when he sees that I have become single-focused. I trust his nudges more now than ever. Yes, writing can become my air. Every breath in acquires ideas, and every breath out interprets the ideas to other people. Thank you for your dearness. ❀
