Here, it is today
Take from it all you’re able
Give to it your best

October 19, 2017: A Haiku

Will a song do, dear?
While with our shadows, we dance
Ella and Louis

He may say of me
I have her smile and her eyes
And know he has mine

My communal arms
Must reach deep, must pull life close
Through my ev’ry breath

Cinnamon billows
Morning’s first roar, for I hope
To awaken him

Mocking me he is
Red…masked…song sweet as Friday
Ev’ry last feather

And if I cannot
What then will I become…what?
Whisper, “let me go.”

Numb I have become
From the needle you’re holding
And you back away

Leave me and let me
Be lost in the shadows ‘twixt
Street lamps and sorrow

Until eight-thirty

Else when my cup is emptied

I shall keep breathing
