Revelation: A Haiku

You were listening
The night I cried in the rain
When no one else heard
****
You kept thoughtful watch
And saw value in details
When no one else looked
****
You called out to me
With a noise that reached my soul
When no one else spoke
****
Gaining clarity
And wandering through the days
Awed by you this gift

Staring at the sun

Always obsessed with sun rises
-and recently wanting to look directly into the sun’s eyes-
I decided today that if I’m never blessed to come face to face with its brilliance,
I will move through my days grateful that it daily stares at me and warms my bones,
and for an eternity,
I will praise the One who placed it there.

All You Really Need To Know I Learned In Law School

1. Always use plain English, not old English. Straight talk is a hot trend, metaphors are banned.

2. If you seek equity, you must do equity. Do have clean, fair hands.

3. Candor is a duty, not an option. Unless you’re into sanctions.

4. Zealous advocacy is a duty. Zeal should not be a problem.

5. There must be a sufficient number of chairs at the table in order for all voices to be heard. The table is a fine place to start.

6. Draft a strong pleading, sign it boldly in black ink. Failure to do so will leave you at the mercy of the court.

7. Virtue is persuasive. See also: persuasiveness is a virtue.

8. The law is a societal equalizer. This bears repeating: The Law is a beautiful thing.

That There Hear

That calling, that calling, that flows from that place, that place that keeps calling me home. Though I know not the way, I am guided each day “with purpose, please let yourself roam.”

That fire, that fire, that flows from that place, that place that I’ll not live without. I must fan its great flame and honor its name and from morning through night be devout.

That quiet, that quiet, that flows from that place, and speaks to me after the storm. It convicts to the heart that made a new start that hope is what best keeps blood warm.

Specifically

Dear Interceptor – I mean, Intercessor:

I am glad for the wise counsel that you seek – I mean, that you provide.

Please reveal to me your purpose in life – I mean my purpose in life.

As you can imagine, it is a challenge to be in this position.

I know at some point things will be less hard – or should I expect that it won’t?

The Practice

I began determined, led.
I looked square into the eyes of it.
I breathed steadily, deeply and without labor.
It invigorated my body -challenging my muscles, my mind.
It did not scare me,
It soothed my mind.
It did not hurt.
I finished and did not cry.
I came without discipline and left convicted.
