No Othering

We must sit alone through This
No one has our back

Not forsaking sunlight then
Nor the sturdiness of these vintage legs

Doors behind us closed, by intent
Facing East, where will our colors lead us

What mystery does the morning hold
What certainty does twilight promise

A Gift You Didn’t Want

Do you remember the after-work nights

I’d let you lay your tawny head in my lap
Content now, at peace finally
You’d fall fast asleep, clutching my hand

The movie would roll
I’d wake you during
With an anything-but-absentminded stroke of your hair
Or after
With a simple kiss

Eagerly, I’d relay all you’d missed
Sleepily, you’d disclose you’d seen it, actually

The gentle walk to bedtime now
Tomorrow’s a busy day
The why, I reasoned
Without reaching out to my heart or my skin
You’d fall fast asleep, clutching my hand

I’d think of you there
So far over there
As my starving skin fell slowly

Morning, I, still clutching

My hand making breakfast with berries
Feeding you what felt like a gift you didn’t want

I remember the sun seemed to always shine through my door on you
As you left for the day
And for too-many days more missing you

I’d fall fast asleep, clutching your hand
In my heart
Skin screaming out at the emptiness, but the weekend was coming

Saturday! The day
You’d let me share my City
My family, my home, my sound-sleep space again
My time, my life
With you

Do you miss this?

Or was boredom all you recall?

Dream Uncontained

A garden growing
Green as they get
Just for me somewhere

I cultivate from afar
Sunlight and truth, I send every day
Prayers pollinating good, good soil and seed

Evenings, my knees feel a joyful exhaustion
As I sleep, a Dream, rooted, yet uncontained, leans closer
Morning dew brings proof the weeds haven’t won

Will I reap?
Will the weeping wither, then fade from memory?
Watch with me

After School

I wish I could’ve told her
Someone should’ve told her
That Friday, after school
She radiated!

Light bounced from her hair
Every which way forever
Stayed with her and it wouldn’t stop
Shot from each strand straight through her

Causing what must be
An eternally electric smile
So I’ll tell the lightning gods
Do not forsake her in school

From Defeat

From a place of respect
From defeat

Not yet ready for the early morning lack
The streets still littered with the chaos that ensued
I close the door

From the other side
I ask, To Whom can I turn

He tells me Yes, and shepherds me to sunlight
